Falling behind on credit card payments is not as difficult as you might think. If you miss one payment, the company will add on an extra payment and late fees, and may even charge an over the limit fee. At this time, the minimum amount you must pay has become enormous. So, what are you going to do?

Well, sometimes if a person cannot afford to pay the least amount due, they won't make a payment to the creditor at all. Many creditors will charge-off your account, which is to send it to a collection agency, if you miss three payments in a row. In fact, a few creditors will hand your account over if you miss only two consecutive payments. Because of this, you should send a payment as soon as you can, even if it is for less than the full amount that they are asking you to give. If you can pay even a little bit each month, you will prevent having your account fall into charge-off status.

There is a solution – Debt Management. With debt management, it is possible for you to have assistance in creating a budget, and your monthly payments can be lowered. Much of the time, the APR is lowered as well. If an outside collection agency has been involved in the situation due to the account being charged-off, additional fees may be imposed. And, if you are forced to deal with a collection agency, your payments will probably be raised and the amount will be higher – that is if you are lucky enough to still make payments. Most collection agencies expect you to pay in full.

That is why, if you fall short one month, you should still do what you reasonably can to pay your creditors something. Although you may still face late or over-limit fees, you will avoid having your account charged-off to a collection agency.
