Examining society today, you can see a real change from the moral degradation of past generations to today. The widely publicized mishaps of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton just might be having a positive effect on young girls. There's an old saying, "Everyone has a purpose, even if it only to serve as a warning to others."
Recently, a resort in Sacramento held a fashion show featuring modest clothing including casual wear, prom dresses, and even wedding and bridesmaid dresses. Teens from local churches sponsoring the event were modeling the fashions. Modest clothing lets young women follow their religious beliefs and still leave something to the imagination. Retail chains and online venues are following the trend by offering clothing selections that are more modest.
In the 1990s, purity rings were introduced to encourage people to abstain from premarital sex. The ring is worn on the left ring finger to remind the wearer that they are committed to remaining chaste until their wedding day. The rings often have gemstones or crosses embedded in them or are engraved with the quote, "True Love Waits." The rings, which are worn by both males and females, can be worn on the finger or can be put on a chain to wear around the neck. Purity rings are still popular about 20 years after being introduced and can be purchased in retail stores and many online Christian websites.
Although you wouldn't know it based on the ubiquitous sex scenes on TV and in movies, chastity is making a comeback. Mothers and fathers are holding back the avalanche of media propaganda in an effort to encourage abstinence and purity. Celibacy has become a way for kids to stand out from the crowd and to rebel against promiscuous conformity, which is ironic. Chastity can also be a rebellion against parents who were hippies, especially for teens introduced to Christian values by their friends.
Teens are not the only ones interested in the chastity movement known as the "new virginity." Many adults who have been sexually active are pursuing purity through a "secondary virginity" and opting to live a chaste and healthy lifestyle from now on while they wait for their life partner.
Polio was wiped out within a generation of the polio vaccine just as sexually transmitted diseases can be wiped out with one generation of purity and chastity. Gaining such broad acceptance from society could take some time. Until then, dress modestly and encourage teens and young adults to wear purity rings as a sign of their commitment to chaste Christian values.
