If you are really looking to create wealth in your life as a home business entrepreneur, don’t overlook the people who came before you. The reason I say this is because, all too often either out of excitement or as competition carried over from the corporate world, we forget that some pretty amazing, intelligent people have already walked the path before us. And while there are no short cuts in life, a mentor can keep you from going the long way around.
If you think mentors aren’t a good use of your time and you can get all you need from eBooks and message boards, think again. You may reach your goals, but I can guarantee it will take you longer because you will need to rely on trial and error as you experiment with information meted out by people, who don’t know you or the specifics of your work.
A mentor is someone who has achieved goals similar to the ones you have set for yourself – whether they are financial, personal or academic. And they have gone about attaining those goals in a way that you would like to. Perhaps they succeeded with a level of absolute integrity that you admire. Or maybe they achieved their goals with a complete focus and drive you aspire to. Whatever their achievement, whatever their method, they will be able to give you the specific, personal, spot-on advice you need – just when you need it.
If you are still not convinced, consider this list of notable people, who were mentored by other notable people in their field.
Business Leaders: Freddie Laker mentored Richard Branson
Political Forefathers: Aristotle mentored Alexander the Great
Great Athletes: Eddy Merckx (five-time Tour de France winner) mentored Lance Armstrong (seven-time Tour de France winner)
How do you find a mentor?
There are several different ways to find a mentor. You can find by referral from a friend or colleague. Or you can go to Google and search for a mentor in your field. And you can hire one for between $100/month and $1000/month, and join something called an “inner circle”. This is usually a weekly or monthly conference call that the mentor (or guru) leads. A lot can be learned both from the mentor and the other members of the inner circle. So the money is well spent.
But I have found that the best mentors are usually free. And if you have the good fortune to be part of a direct sales company, they are easy to find. They are the people who everyone is talking about. They might be a rising star or they might be a longtime success story. But they know where they are going and how to help you get where you want to be.
Once you’ve found someone whom you think will be a good mentor for you, but BEFORE you ask them to be your mentor, find out the answers to these questions:
What kind of support will that person supply? Will she take my phone calls? Or will our relationship be limited to Inner Circle meetings only?
How interested will he be in seeing me succeed? The best mentors (as well as the greatest leaders) know that helping others succeed helps them succeed.
Does she EXPECT excellence from me? Choose a mentor that honestly believes you will succeed in all your goals. What better company could you hope to keep than that?!
How willing is she to learn about me and my goals? The more she is willing to know about you, the better the advice and results will be.
Once you have a match, get started! There is no time to waste on your way to personal and financial success!
